The Brown County Genealogy Trails puts it this way: "Established around 1858 by the Wabash Railroad as Mound Station, the Brown County community was incorporated as a village Dec. 23, 1901. Businesspeople had problems receiving freight because there was a town in southern Illinois names Mounds, so the name was changed to Timewell, with the post office taking the new name in 1903."
