The Andreas History of the State of Nebraska puts it this way: "The town site was formerly owned by William Roggenkamp, and was laid out, and the first buildings erected in 1871, at which time the Midland Railroad (now under lease of the Burlington & Missouri) reached here. The town derived its name from John Bennet, one of the officials of the Midland Railroad Company."
