Every town has a first chapter, and St. Helen is no exception. In 1881 the lumber firm of Henry Stephens and Sons contracted to build 75 houses and two large mills at St. Helen, and a new depot went up. By 1888 the family firm owned three quarters of the standing pine along the railroad's Mackinaw branch, cut over 50 million feet of lumber a year, and ran logging railroads out of St. Helen.
