Mahtowa has a story worth telling. The little village of Mahtowa once supplied Chicago with most of its Christmas trees. Balsam fir grew so thickly around Mahtowa that hardly a balsam was left in sight of the station, and in the days before Christmas about half a dozen freight cars of trees went out every day. Mahtowa sat on the St. Paul and Duluth railroad, and that year St. Louis received its first shipment of Mahtowa balsams too. That's from the Duluth Evening Herald.
