Peoplestown takes its name from the Peoples family, early landowners in the area. In 1885 the Atlanta Electric Railway laid a line along Capitol Avenue. Builders soon began putting up houses in the new neighborhood. By the 1890s, nearby Washington Street was among the city’s most fashionable places to live.
