The West Virginia Archives and History puts it this way: "With Confederate militia organizing in Boone County, Union troops were sent on a raid from Charleston in August 1861. The two sides met on the 31st, and on September 1 Union forces defeated Confederates under Col. Ezekiel Miller at the county seat. After the fight, Union troops burned the town, destroying the log courthouse, which was not replaced by a new brick building until 1865."
