Did You Know?
On Good Friday, March 27, 1964, a tsunami from a 9.2 earthquake destroyed the village of Chenega and killed 26 of its people, more than a third of them. No community lost a larger share of its people in that disaster. The survivors were moved to Tatitlek, Cordova and Anchorage, and in 1984 a group of former villagers built a new village on Evans Island. That's from the Chenega Corporation.
