Did You Know?
Port Clarence is the only good harbor on the west shore of the Seward Peninsula, and it was one of the first meeting places for the whaling fleets of the mid-1800s. Russian explorers knew it as Kaviaiak Bay. Captain Frederick William Beechey named it in September 1827, for the Duke of Clarence, and wrote that it could hold a great many warships. That's from the Encyclopedia Arctica at Dartmouth College.
Port Clarence is a community in Nome Census Area.
