Did You Know?
In the 1970s Prudhoe Bay was built up for oil drilling, and an 800-mile pipeline was laid to carry its crude oil to Valdez. From there, tankers ship it to terminals all over the United States. The pipeline has 12 pump stations and can carry up to 2 million barrels of crude oil a day. Prudhoe Bay is a large work camp for the oil industry. Everyone who lives here works for an oil company or a support company, on long shifts in a row. That's from the State of Alaska community database.
