Fortuna Foothills lies on Interstate 8 at the western edge of the Gila Mountains, east of Yuma. KNOWOL made this map in 2026 and gave it the look of an old atlas. The shaded relief of Telegraph Pass comes from United States Geological Survey elevation data, and the streets were drawn from Census Bureau files. The community covers 40.0 square miles, all of it land, and it had 27,776 people at the 2020 census, up from 26,265 in 2010.
Named for a mine
The community sits on the northwest foothills of the Gila Mountains, and it’s named for the Fortuna Mine. Building began in the 1960s, when a local developer, Hank Schechert, bought 3,000 acres east of Yuma. Today Fortuna Foothills is a bedroom community for Yuma, the Yuma Proving Ground and Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, and many of its residents are seasonal. At the 2020 census the median age was 61.2, and 44.1 percent of residents were 65 or older.
The Gila Mountains and Telegraph Pass
The Gila Mountains of Yuma County run about 26 miles from northwest to southeast, and their highest peak is Sheep Peak, at 3,156 feet. The range lies in the western part of the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range, used by Marine Corps Air Station Yuma. Telegraph Pass, at the north end of the range about 19 miles east of Yuma, carries Interstate 8 on one of the oldest sections of the Interstate Highway System. The highway is two-tiered there: the eastbound lanes pass under the westbound lanes and run on the left for a short way before switching back. The road cuts at the pass expose some of the oldest metamorphic rocks in Arizona outside the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

Around the foothills
Most of Fortuna Foothills is in the Yuma Elementary School District and the Yuma Union High School District, and a smaller part is in the Wellton Elementary and Antelope Union High School districts. In the Yuma district, most of the area is zoned to Sunrise Elementary School, and the part south of Interstate 8 and west of South Foothills Boulevard to Mary Otondo Elementary School. Middle schoolers are split between Ron Watson Middle School, for most of the community, and Castle Dome Middle School, and the whole Yuma Union part of the community is zoned to Gila Ridge High School. Yuma County Area Transit serves the area.
The Foothills Library and Foothills Community Park have their places on the sheet, and so do the churches: Foothills Assembly of God, Calvary Chapel Foothills and Foothills Southern Baptist Church. The Fortuna Palms Community Club is here too. The streets reach from Southern Sands Mobile out to Mesa del Sol. Along with Fortuna Wash, a feature printed simply as Drainage helps give the land its shape.
