Did You Know?
In 1906 two Hopi chiefs at Oraibi, You-ke-oma and Tawa-quap-tewa, had a major dispute. Instead of fighting with guns or arrows, they held a push-of-war. A line was cut into the mesa, and the two groups pushed against each other until Tawa-quap-tewa's side crossed it and won. You-ke-oma and his followers left and founded Hotevilla, four miles away. The contest is recorded in the rock a quarter mile north of Oraibi, with the line, the date Sept. 8, 1906, a bear paw for Tawa-quap-tewa's Bear Clan and a skull for You-ke-oma's Skeleton Clan.
