Every town has a first chapter, and Likely is no exception. Likely was first called South Fork, for the South Fork of the Pit River. When residents asked for a new post office in 1886, the postal department turned down South Fork and three more names. As local lore has it, someone at a meeting said it was likely they would never agree on a name. The Likely post office opened on April 13, 1886, with Marx Lauer as its first postmaster. That's from the Lassen County historian Tim Purdy.
