Bankhead took its name from Bankhead Highway. The road was later renamed Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway for a civil rights lawyer who lived nearby in Collier Heights. The neighborhood also named a 1990s dance, the Bankhead Bounce. Michael Jackson performed it at the 1995 MTV Music Video Awards.
