If you grew up off Gravois Road, Tesson Ferry Road or South Lindbergh Boulevard, this map will feel like home. It's an aerial-style view, made from modern data with a vintage feel, of Sappington in St. Louis County, Missouri. Green hills roll across the whole sheet. Sappington's homes and stores are printed in deep red, block by block. Near the middle, you can spot a running track and a cluster of ball fields. A wide highway cuts across the lower half on a long slant.

Why the town is called Sappington
Sappington's name goes back a long way. The historic Ramsay Place Names File, kept by the State Historical Society of Missouri, says it simply: "It was named for a family of pioneers." That name is still all over the map. You'll see it on Sappington Road, Sappington Lane and Sappington Acres Drive.
Two old houses carry the name, too. The Zephaniah Sappington House stands at 11145 Gravois Road. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The Joseph Sappington House, on Clearwater Drive, followed in 1982. Gravois Road, where the first one stands, is one of the main roads on this print.
