Work began on March 5, 1936, with as many as 900 men on the job at its height, and in June 1937 the unfinished dam held back its first Pecos River flood. Built of earth and rockfill, the dam rose 149 feet and formed a reservoir some 15 miles long. That's from the National Park Service.
