This series of vintage posters was created for South Side High School in Rockville Centre, New York as part of the Work Projects Administration. The WPA was a government program that ran from 1936 – 1943 and designed posters to publicize art programs, community activities, theatrical productions and educational events across the country.

The three vintage posters seen here were created for South Side High School in Rockville Centre, New York. The posters promote South Side’s Varsity Band and a “Party & Barter” benefit for the Nassau Art Teachers Scholarship Fund.

South Side Varsity Band Concert

This WPA poster promoted a South Side Varsity Band Concert led by Harvey A. Sartorious, band director of the Rockville Centre high school. The guest conductor for the show was Harwood Simmons, who was the Director of the Columbia University Band and the Director of Band Music at the 1939 New York World’s Fair.

The concert was held at South Side High School in Rockville Centre on March 11th, 1941 at 8:30pm. Orchestra seats cost 50 cents and balcony seats cost 75 cents.

South Side Parent Teacher’s Association

The South Side Parent teachers association organized a South Side Varsity Band Concert at the high school in Rockville Centre to raise funds for the student loans fund. The concert was held on Tuesday, November 22 at 8:30pm.

Nassau Art Teachers Benefit

Poster advertises a “Card Party and Barter Benefit” for the Nassau Art Teachers Scholarship Fund. The fundraiser was held at the Coca Cola Plant in Rockville Centre, and the poster was sponsored by South Side High School.
