Take Engle Street north to Concord Road and head west. You'll pass Feltonville, then Green Lawn Cemetery and Haven Memorial Park and Crematory. From there, Green Street runs south to Bethel Road, and Ebright and Carter Avenues branch off it to the west. Booth and Felton Streets run down to Bethel Road nearby. Back on Concord Road, Commerce Drive and McDonald Boulevard lead west to the biggest red buildings on the sheet. Now look northeast. A creek, not labeled, curls around a tight loop of homes on Powell, Worrilow and Gideon Roads. Camp Upland, marked as a park, sits beside it. Late in 1725, Robert Park wrote a letter from Chester Township to his sister, Mary Valentine, in Ireland. She was about to move to Pennsylvania. He asked her to bring him a saddle and bridle. He wanted the saddle narrow, "for the horses here are Large as in Ireland, but the best racers and finest pacers in the World." He also sent family news. "Uncle Nicholas Kooper lives very well," he wrote. Kooper rented a farm and taught school, and another man worked the land for him. In summer, he wrote, people there wore linen "Trowses," breeches and stockings made all in one. Henry Graham Ashmead quoted the letter in his 1884 History of Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He noted that Kooper is the first teacher named in the county's story since 1672.
The history doesn't say where in the township Park lived, so no one can point to his home on this map. The name at the top of his letter is, though. It's printed in big letters on the title panel.
