The 1890 History of Venango County tells of Lawrence Dempsey's arrival in 1797. Near Dempseytown, he planted what the book calls Oakland's first orchard. It was also one of the first in the county. Some old, gnarled trees still stood when the history was written. His son Peter later kept a hotel at Dempseytown for many years.
