The 1883 county history puts the islands at the heart of Reed's story. It describes farms on the large river islands and a ferry crossing at Clark's Ferry. The Wiconisco Canal and Northern Central Railroad edged the river through the township. On the print, Benvenue and the broad island shapes give that river setting a familiar face.
Reed became a township on April 6, 1849. The law told its voters to hold elections at the new schoolhouse on Duncan's Island. It also made Reed a separate school district.
