Did You Know?
Elk City began with a placer gold strike in 1861. Prospectors from Pierce and other camps hurried into the South Fork Clearwater country. By that fall, more than 2,000 people had crowded the diggings. After a big fire in 1930 and the fading of mining, the town turned to timber, ranching and recreation.
