Every town has a first chapter, and Lafitte is no exception. The Lafitte skiff, a shrimp boat now popular all along the Gulf Coast, was inspired by the plywood PT boats built in Louisiana during World War Two. Emile Dufrene of Lafitte was instrumental in developing the design. Builders took the PT boat's hull and big inboard engine and added a fantail stern, an ice hold and outriggers for trawling. That's from the Louisiana Folklife Program.
Lafitte is a community in Jefferson Parish. The Census Bureau counted 1,014 people here in 2020.
