Did You Know?
Gardiner was named for a trapper who worked the upper Yellowstone and its streams in the 1830s. When the railroad came in 1883, a dispute over the townsite left the end of the line at Cinnabar, four miles north. Gardiner was known as the town that waited twenty years for a railroad, until the tracks reached it in 1902. In 1903 Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone of the Roosevelt Arch, the gateway at the park boundary just past town. That's from the 1939 WPA guide to Montana.
