Every town has a first chapter, and Key Center is no exception. In 1931 Alden Visell, whose store stood at the new crossroads, and other local businessmen held a contest to rename the peninsula. Ed Stone won 25 dollars for Key Peninsula, for its likeness to an old-fashioned key, and Nelson Peck proposed calling the business area Key Center. After a week of voting at the store, Elsie Olson was named the mayor of Key Center and given a bouquet of Key Center flowers, which were skunk cabbage. That's from the Key Peninsula News.
