Did You Know?
Indigenous people known as the Qaluyaarmiut have lived at Newtok for at least 2,000 years. In 1994 the Newtok Traditional Council began to consider moving the village because of ongoing erosion, weighed six sites, and chose Mertarvik at the north end of Nelson Island. In 2011 the council resolved that its people would have the first and final say in every decision. In late 2019 about a third of the residents, some 140 adults and children, moved to Mertarvik. That's from the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit.
