John Beaton and a partner found gold at Flat on Christmas Day, 1908, and it proved to be the widest pay streak ever found in Alaska. About 6,000 people came between 1910 and 1914, and Flat soon had a school, a telephone system, two stores, a hotel, a pool hall and a jail. By the end of World War II only 15 people lived here year-round. That's from the State of Alaska community database.
