Did You Know?
The Unangan people used Nelson Lagoon as a summer fish camp. It was named in 1882 for Edward William Nelson of the U.S. Signal Corps, who explored the Yukon Delta. A salmon saltery ran here from 1906 to 1917 and drew Scandinavian fishermen, and people began living here year-round after a school was built in 1965. That's from the State of Alaska community database.
