Did You Know?
When mining picked up on Nolan Creek and the Hammond River in the early 1900s, people began leaving Coldfoot, 13 miles to the south. A new town grew up in 1907 where horse-drawn barges brought supplies up the Koyukuk River to Wiseman Creek. It was first called Wrights, then Nolan, and took the name Wiseman in 1923. A log post office ran here from about 1909 to 1956, with mail and supplies brought in by freight or by plane. That's from the State of Alaska community database.
