Did You Know?
Klukwan takes its name from the Tlingit phrase Tlakw Aan, which literally means Eternal Village. Local oral history tells that the village was first settled long ago by a group of Gaanaxteidi (Raven Clan) men and their Kaagwaantaan (Eagle Clan) wives, who chose the site for its rich natural environment. Klukwan is home to the world famous Whale House, with its Rain Wall screen and four house posts, a collection pictured in nearly every book on Tlingit and Northwest Coast art. That's from the Chilkat Indian Village.
