Did You Know?
The Yup'ik people of Iliamna Lake call this place Tagyaracuar, which means a small place for going up. It is a trail and site on the south side of the lake. In interviews from 2016 to 2019, local people described the name as the movement of walking on the trail. The English name, Pope Vannoy, came later from a settler's last name. Around the lake the Yup'ik named places for their harvests, for local history and for newcomers, and the study lists Tagyaracuar as one of the names that keeps a local history. That's from the 2022 study of Iliamna Lake place names.
