Did You Know?
Groton was first called Cockermouth. That name honored Charles Wyndham, Earl of Egremont, who was Britain’s Secretary of State for the Southern Department. Nobody settled the land, so it was granted again in 1766 and renewed in 1772. In 1796 grantee Samuel Blood renamed the town for his hometown of Groton, Massachusetts.
