Did You Know?
Newbury was first called Dantzic, after the Baltic seaport of Danzig. A 1754 grant renamed it Hereford for Edward Devereaux, Viscount Hereford. In 1772 Wentworth renewed the grant as Fishersfield. That name honored his brother-in-law, John Fisher. Settlers from Newbury, Massachusetts, suggested the final name, adopted in 1837.
