Barrington was incorporated in 1722. It honored Samuel Shute of Barrington Hall, who governed both Massachusetts and New Hampshire as a colony. Rocky soil slowed settlement, but by 1810 the town had 3,564 residents. That made it the third largest town in the state, and smelting iron ore was its main work.
