Grantham was incorporated in 1761. Its name honors Thomas Robinson, 1st Baron Grantham. He was Secretary of State for the Southern Department from 1754 to 1755. The Leavitt family was among the early settlers. By one account, the Leavitts once had fifty children in the town school at the same time.
