The city took its name from Claremont, the country house of Thomas Pelham-Holles, Earl of Clare. Governor Benning Wentworth granted the township in 1764. Moses Spafford and David Lynde had already settled here in 1762. Spafford was the first man married in town, and his son Elijah was the first settler child born in town.
