Camilla was laid out in 1857 as the seat of Mitchell County. A marker in the center of town honors the Hawthorne Trail. William Hawthorne blazed it in 1818 while seeking a short route from North Carolina to Florida. Two years later he widened the trail and settled with his family near Cairo.
