If you grew up in Middletown Township, went to school at Williamson, or drive Baltimore Pike past Granite Run most days, this map gives you plenty to find. It's a modern aerial view of Middletown Township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, made from modern data and given a vintage look. More than 21,000 buildings are marked in deep red over soft green hills. The view runs from Sycamore Mills and Tyler Arboretum at the top down past Glen Riddle to Linvilla and Knowlton.
Baltimore Pike, Lima and Glen Riddle
Start at the Middletown Municipal Building, printed near the middle of the sheet by Baltimore Pike. Lima sits just above it, where North New Middletown Road heads north toward Lima Estates. Now follow Baltimore Pike east. You'll pass Granite Run and Black Horse, then Riddle Glen. Go back and take the Pike the other way. It runs southwest past Granite Farms Estates down to Wawa.
From Lima, follow North Pennell Road south to Baltimore Pike. South Pennell Road continues toward Glen Riddle, with Lenni to the west. Keep going and you'll pass Mount Alverno and Old Mill Pointe. Off to the east, South New Middletown Road heads toward Elwyn and Bortondale. Up top, Barren Road runs north toward Sycamore Mills near Tyler Arboretum. Many of the roads are named, and each red shape is a building, so zoom in on the preview and look for yours.
Joshua Pusey and the paper matchbook
Joshua Pusey lived in Lima after 1889, at a home called "Maple Linden." In 1892 he got a U.S. patent for the paper matchbook. That's according to a state historical marker in Lima. Three years later he sold the patent to the Diamond Match Company. Soon millions of matchbooks were made every year. Pusey was a Civil War veteran and a Philadelphia lawyer for a long time. He earned nearly 40 patents in his life. To find his part of town, look for Lima just above the Municipal Building.
Another marker stands at the Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades, between North Drive and Main Drive. Isaiah V. Williamson started the school in 1888. He wanted to teach young men from poor families "some trade, free of expense." The marker says it's the only trade school in the country that gives every student a full scholarship. The campus also has the largest group of buildings still standing by the architect Frank Furness. Look just south of Baltimore Pike for Schrenks Way and Station Drive, and the campus drives are close by.
Sycamore Mills, Tyler Arboretum and Middletown's creeks
