Glassmaking brought a deep mine to this area. The historical marker at Hudson Run Road and Fairland Road tells the story. In 1899, Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company built a plant to make soda ash for glass. Raw materials and rail links drew the company here. Production began in 1900 under the name Columbia Chemical Company. During the 1900s, the plant ran the world's deepest limestone mine, at 2,200 feet.
The plant also made chlorine, caustic soda and calcium chloride. By 2000, its work had shifted to specialty chemicals for industries such as printing and rubber. Mining and the older bulk chemicals had given way to those products. You can find both Hudson Run Road and Fairland Road on this map near Johnsons Corners. Those printed names give you a place to connect with the plant's story.
