St. Nicholas Croatian Church on Maryland Avenue
A state historical marker tells how Croatian families came to Pittsburgh. They left hard lives behind in their homeland. The marker says familiar land and the chance of work drew many of them here. The first Croatian Catholic parish in America started in 1894. Its North Side church was torn down in 2013, and the marker now stands on East Ohio Street. Millvale has its own St. Nicholas Croatian Church, at 24 Maryland Avenue. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Find Maryland Avenue on the map, and you're close to it.
Down by the water, the Fortieth Street Bridge crosses the Allegheny River. It joined the National Register in 1988. Look for 40th Street near the river on the map. From there, the town's streets run back into the valley.
