Sgt. Michael Strank grew up in Franklin
Franklin is a small borough, but one of its boys stood in one of the most famous moments of World War II. A state historical marker tells his story. Michael Strank was born on November 10, 1919, in Czechoslovakia. He grew up here in Franklin Borough. In World War II he served as a Marine sergeant. On February 23, 1945, he was one of six men who raised the U.S. flag on Iwo Jima. He was the oldest of the six and the highest in rank. Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press took a photo of that moment. The photo was later used for the Marine Corps War Memorial at Arlington.
Sgt. Strank didn't come home. He was killed in action on March 1, 1945, a few days after the flag went up. In 1949 he was buried again in Arlington Cemetery. The marker was placed in 1986 at 1125 Main Street, at the fire department. Find Main Street on the map and you'll be close to the spot where Franklin remembers him.
