How Green Tree got its name
Green Tree got its name from a hotel. The 1889 History of Allegheny County says the name was first used for a hotel. That hotel still went by it when the book was written. The place became a post office on May 10, 1844. Back then this was farm country. The book says it was all farms, but it was starting to grow like a suburb. The Washington road had just been paved with crushed stone, and more work was planned.
Green Tree became its own borough on July 14, 1885. It was cut from the western part of Union Township. The book lists three churches: Wesley Methodist, Mount Pisgah Presbyterian and German Lutheran. Mount Pisgah started in 1830. The Lutheran pastor, Rev. G. H. Schnorr, was the borough's first burgess. The old hotel name now shows up all over the map, on Greentree Road, Green Tree Park and the Green Tree Nature Center.
