Did You Know?
Hyder began as Portland City. When local prospectors asked for a post office in 1914, they were turned down because too many American towns were already named Portland, so they named the town for Frederick Hyder, a respected Canadian mining engineer who predicted a prosperous future for mining here. During Prohibition, a little Hyder, B.C. sprang up just across the border as a legal speakeasy. That's from the State of Alaska community database.
