Did You Know?

Sutton was founded around 1918 as a coal station on the Matanuska branch of the Alaska Railroad. From 1941 to 1945 it was the base camp for building the Glenn Highway. Coal mining fueled the economy until 1968, when the Anchorage military bases switched to oil and the mines closed. New subdivisions brought growth again in the 1980s. That’s from the Alaska DCRA.
