Map of Gilbert, Arizona in 2026

Gilbert is the most populous incorporated town in the United States, and people have called it the largest town in America. This map prints HD SOUTH, the Gilbert Community Center, Perry Library, Highland High School, Mesquite High School and Campo Verde High School, with the streets reaching from Sunview out to Gilbert Ranch and Sonoqui Wash and Queen Creek shaping the land.

Gilbert is a town in Maricopa County, southeast of Phoenix, with Mesa to the north and Chandler to the southwest.

KNOWOL made this map in 2026 and gave it the look of an old atlas. The shaded relief of the landscape comes from United States Geological Survey elevation data, and the streets were drawn from Census Bureau files. HD SOUTH was checked against National Park Service and National Register of Historic Places records. The town covers 68.86 square miles, and 267,918 people lived here at the 2020 census.

The Hay Shipping Capital

The town takes its name from William “Bobby” Gilbert, who gave land to the Arizona Eastern Railway in 1902 for a line between Phoenix and Florence. Ayer’s Grocery Store, Gilbert’s first store, opened in 1910 and took in the first post office in 1912. The post office moved several times before it settled on the east side of Gilbert Road downtown, where it still stands. Also in 1912, Mormon families who had fled the church’s colonies in Mexico to escape Pancho Villa’s forces settled here. By 1915 they were meeting at the Gilbert Elementary School, and in 1918 they became the Gilbert Ward.

Gilbert incorporated on July 6, 1920, as a farm town. The railroad, Roosevelt Dam and the Eastern and Consolidated Canals fed its fields, and it stayed an agricultural town for many years, once known as the “Hay Shipping Capital of the World.” The Gilbert Elementary School, built in 1913, is on the National Register of Historic Places and now holds the Gilbert Historical Museum.

A town that grew

Between 2000 and 2010 Gilbert was the fastest-growing incorporated place of 100,000 or more people in the country, growing by 90%. It’s still a town, not a city, which gives it fewer powers than Mesa and Chandler next door. The Gilbert Arizona Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was dedicated on March 2, 2014. It stands 195 feet tall with its angel Moroni statue, on 15.4 acres at Greenfield and Pecos Roads, and its design uses interlinked agave leaves as a symbol of the eternal nature of marriage and family. Twelve thousand church members took part in a cultural celebration at Discovery Park for the dedication.

At Gilbert Town Hall, a 9/11 memorial holds an eight-foot steel beam that once held up the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Former Fire Chief Collin DeWitt raised money for three years to build it and drove to New York to collect the beam himself with Assistant Fire Chief Jim Jobusch. The beam is angled so everyone can reach it, four granite walls carry the names of those killed in the attacks, and the foundation was poured in the shape of a pentagon. It was unveiled on September 11, 2011. Gilbert’s fire department was also the first in Arizona to put an electric fire engine to work, and Eduprize in Gilbert was the first charter school in Arizona.

The Gilbert Community Center and Perry Library have their places on the sheet, and so does HD SOUTH. Look for Sunview and Gilbert Ranch at either end of the town’s streets, and for Sonoqui Wash and Queen Creek in the shaded land.
