If you grew up in Kingman, you know the old Santa Fe depot downtown and the stone Bonelli House. This map runs from the Kingman Commercial Historic District out to Hilltop, and it prints the Kingman Railroad Museum, the Bonelli House, the Mohave County Superior Courthouse, the Little Red School, Hualapai Elementary and Palo Christi Elementary, with Rattlesnake Wash, Beale Spring and Grapevine Spring giving shape to the land.
Kingman is a city in central Mohave County, and it has been the county seat since 1887.
KNOWOL made this map in 2026 and gave it the look of an old atlas. The shaded relief of the landscape comes from United States Geological Survey elevation data, and the streets were drawn from Census Bureau files. Historic sites such as the Little Red School, Palo Christi Elementary and the Bonelli House were confirmed against the National Park Service and the National Register of Historic Places. Kingman sits in the Hualapai Valley between the Cerbat and Hualapai mountain ranges, and 32,689 people lived here at the 2020 census.
A siding near Beale Spring
Native Americans living in the area used Beale Spring for centuries. In Hualapai the place is Ha’a kumawe’, and the Hualapai band of the Cerbat Mountains lived in the mountains north of it. In 1857 Lieutenant Edward Fitzgerald Beale, a Navy officer working for the Army’s topographical engineers, surveyed a federal wagon road along the 35th parallel through what is now Kingman, and he came back in 1859 to build it; his orders also had him test camels as pack animals in the desert. Beale’s road later became part of U.S. Route 66 and then Interstate 40, and pieces of it can still be seen in White Cliffs Canyon.
Kingman was founded in 1882 and started out as a railroad siding near Beale Springs. It’s named for Lewis Kingman, the civil engineer who surveyed and built the Atlantic and Pacific line from Flagstaff to Needles through here in 1880. The county seat had moved from Mohave City to Hardyville, then to Cerbat and Mineral Park, before it came to Kingman for good in 1887. The 1915 Mohave County Courthouse and its 1909 jail were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and the Mohave County Superior Court is in Kingman. During World War II the Kingman Army Airfield trained some 35,000 soldiers and airmen as an aerial gunnery school, and Ford built a proving ground nearby at Yucca in 1955.

Andy Devine Avenue and the depot
The Kingman Commercial Historic District covers 4.5 acres along the 300 and 400 blocks of Andy Devine Avenue and was listed on the National Register in 1986. It takes in the Beale Hotel, the Brunswick Hotel, the 1906 Lovin Building, the Luthy Block and the Santa Fe railroad depot. The Santa Fe railway built the depot in 1907, in the Spanish Colonial Revival style with curving gables along its roofline. After a restoration finished in the early 2010s, it holds Amtrak’s waiting room and a railroad museum, and the Southwest Chief stops here once a day in each direction.
Andy Devine, the actor with the raspy, crackly voice, was raised in Kingman and appeared in more than 400 films, including Stagecoach with John Wayne. Devine claimed his voice came from a childhood fall at the Beale Hotel with a curtain rod in his mouth, though a biographer said it was one of several stories he made up about it. The Mohave Museum of History and Arts, founded in 1961, keeps an exhibit on him along with its Hualapai room. Paul Kalanithi moved to Kingman at 10 and graduated from Kingman High School as valedictorian before becoming a neurosurgeon and the author of the memoir When Breath Becomes Air. In 1939 Clark Gable and Carole Lombard were married at the rectory of Saint John’s Methodist Episcopal Church in Kingman, during a break in filming Gone with the Wind.
George Bonelli built the Bonelli House in 1915 from local Peach Springs Tuff stone, after the family’s first house on the property burned that January. It’s a two-story house with a hipped roof and a veranda on three sides, built to suit the desert, and the Bonellis raised nine children there and ran four businesses in the area. The City of Kingman owns it now, and the Mohave County Historical Society runs it as a house museum. Hualapai Elementary is one of the Kingman Unified School District’s schools. Palo Christi Elementary is printed too, and that school is now closed. The Little Red School, Hilltop, Rattlesnake Wash and Grapevine Spring have their places on the sheet too.
