Lake Havasu City is the desert town with a London bridge in it. This map prints London Bridge and English Village, Lake Havasu High School, Grace Arts Live, the Lake Havasu City Aquatic Center and the Mohave College Lake Havasu City Campus, with the Chemehuevi Valley, Aqua Wash and Chemehuevi Wash giving shape to the land.
Lake Havasu City is a city in southwestern Mohave County, on the east shore of Lake Havasu.
KNOWOL made this map in 2026 and gave it the look of an old atlas. The shaded relief of the Chemehuevi Valley comes from United States Geological Survey elevation data, and the streets were drawn from Census Bureau files. The city is 60 miles south of Kingman, and 57,144 people lived here at the 2020 census.
McCulloch’s city
Lake Havasu is a reservoir on the Colorado River, formed by Parker Dam, which the Bureau of Reclamation built between 1934 and 1938. Before the dam the area was home to the Mojave people, and the lake was named in 1939 for the Mojave word for blue. The Chemehuevi Valley and Chemehuevi Wash share their name with the Chemehuevi, the southernmost branch of the Southern Paiute. During World War II the Army Air Corps had a rest camp here called Site Six. Robert P. McCulloch, the chainsaw maker, came to the lake looking for a place to test outboard motors, and in 1958 he bought more than 3,000 acres on the east shore along Pittsburgh Point, then a peninsula. In 1963, on the courthouse steps in Kingman, he bought a 26-square-mile piece of desert that became the city’s site, and the city was established that September. To find buyers, McCulloch Properties flew people in for free from around the country, and from 1964 through 1978 it made 2,702 flights. McCulloch hired C. V. Wood, the chief developer of Disneyland, to lay out the city’s roads, and the city incorporated in 1978.
The land was far from any big town and very hot, and buyers were slow to come. McCulloch’s real estate agent, Robert Plumer, learned that London Bridge was for sale and talked him into buying it. McCulloch’s first answer was, “That’s the craziest idea I have ever heard.” The bridge, John Rennie’s last project, was finished by his son in 1831 and spanned the River Thames until the City of London sold it in April 1968. Only its outer granite blocks came to Arizona. Each facing stone was numbered and catalogued, the stones went by ship through the Panama Canal to Long Beach, California, and then overland to the lake. On September 23, 1968, the Lord Mayor of London, Sir Gilbert Inglefield, relaid the foundation stone. Sundt Construction clad a new concrete bridge in the old stone over a little more than three years, and it was finished in 1971.

Around the bridge
The bridge wasn’t built over water. It went up on dry land between the city and Pittsburgh Point, and then the Bridgewater Channel was dredged beneath it, which turned the peninsula into an island. Today the bridge crosses that channel between Thompson Bay and the northern part of the lake. Land sales picked up once the bridge was built, and McCulloch earned back what he’d spent on it. A popular rumor says he thought he was buying Tower Bridge, but McCulloch and Ivan Luckin, who arranged the sale, both denied it. The city’s page calls London Bridge the second-largest tourist attraction in Arizona, after the Grand Canyon. English Village, an open-air mall built in faux-English style, once had a hedge maze and a history museum; it wore down over the years, parts of it were leveled, and plans to revive it have been made since.
The city holds Arizona’s highest recorded temperature, 128 °F, set on June 29, 1994. Winter brings retirees from colder parts of the country and Canada, and in February the city holds Winterfest on McCulloch Boulevard. Lake Havasu High School is the city’s one high school, and Mohave Community College has a campus here. Grace Arts Live and the Lake Havasu City Aquatic Center have their places on the sheet too.
This map of Lake Havasu City is a good addition to an office, library or den, and it can help teach children the geography and history of the area. It’s made for anyone who calls Lake Havasu City home, and KNOWOL created it in 2026 to show the city as it looks today.
