Map of Tusayan, Arizona in 2026

Tusayan sits about a mile from the south entrance of Grand Canyon National Park, and its hotels hold more rooms than the park itself. This map of Tusayan prints Long Jim Canyon, giving shape to the land around the town’s streets.

Tusayan is a town in Coconino County, a gateway community at the Grand Canyon’s South Rim.

KNOWOL made this map in 2026 and gave modern data the look of a vintage atlas. The shaded relief of the landscape comes from United States Geological Survey elevation data, and the streets were drawn from Census Bureau files. The 2020 census counted 603 people in Tusayan, and Arizona State Route 64 and U.S. Route 180 share a four-lane road through town that narrows to two lanes outside the business district.

Arizona’s 91st town

Tusayan first looked into becoming a town in the early 1990s. The state passed a law to allow it, but the law was challenged and struck down as unconstitutional because it applied only to Tusayan. In 2003 a new law let any community of 500 or more people near a national park or monument incorporate, and the Tusayan-Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce named a task force that studied the question for four years before making a neutral presentation to the community in June 2007. Voters turned the idea down 78 to 62 in September 2008. On March 9, 2010, they approved it 116 to 71, making Tusayan the 91st incorporated place in Arizona, and an interim council chosen by the Coconino County supervisors held the first town council meeting on April 7. As a town, Tusayan covers only 144 acres, which its page says makes it the smallest town in Arizona by area.

Most businesses here serve visitors to the park, and some residents have wanted to make the town a destination of its own. Tusayan’s hotels have about 1,100 rooms, more than Grand Canyon National Park. Summer days are hot and the nights cool off fast: an average June day runs from a high of 82 degrees down to a low of 40. Most of the town is in the Grand Canyon Unified School District, whose one high school, Grand Canyon High School, is in Grand Canyon Village; the first school at the Grand Canyon opened in 1911, a year before statehood, in a building loaned by Ralph and Niles Cameron.

Around the map

Grand Canyon National Park Airport is in Tusayan, 1 mile from the South Rim entrance. The first Grand Canyon airport, a landing field near Red Butte about 7.6 miles southwest, opened for commercial flights in 1928; the present airport opened in October 1965, and its terminal was dedicated on October 20, 1967. It’s used mostly for scenic tours and charter flights, and its page calls it the fourth most active air carrier airport in Arizona. The forest around the town is the Tusayan Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest. There was once a Tusayan National Forest south of the canyon, which was folded into the Kaibab in 1934, and the ranger district is now part of the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni, Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument. Long Jim Canyon has its place on the sheet.

This Tusayan map makes a good addition to an office, library or den, and it can help teach children the geography and history of the area. It’s made for anyone who calls Tusayan home, just south of the Grand Canyon, and KNOWOL created it in 2026 to show the town as it looks today.
