Every town has a first chapter, and French Gulch is no exception. A party of Frenchmen is said to have done the first mining at French Gulch in 1849 or 1850. After the Washington Quartz Mining Company found its claim, the Shasta Courier reported in March 1852 that the diggings were so rich that miners were tearing down their houses to chase the leads that ran under them. That's from the Federal Writers Project.
