Did You Know?

In 1859 Bartow had just two houses. One held the overseer of the railroad builders. In the other, William Spier kept a commissary for the railroad hands. That year Reverend Russel Johnson and Marcus Evans came from Burke County and opened a store. Their homes, built side by side, hosted travelers for many years. That’s from the 1927 History of Jefferson County.
