Did You Know?
Saint John's began in 1856, when a small group of Benedictine monks led by Prior Demetrius di Marogna came west from Saint Vincent's Abbey near Pittsburgh to serve German Catholic immigrants in Minnesota Territory. After several moves they made their permanent home on the shores of Lake Sagatagan in 1866. The territorial legislature chartered their school in 1857, and it took the name Saint John's University in 1883. That's from the National Register of Historic Places.
