In the Gilded Age, investors planned a grand hotel in Colebrook called the Metallak, after a Native American chief. Architect John Calvin Stevens designed it. In April 1893 a windstorm wrecked its frame on Lombard’s Hill, and investors gave up. Stevens shrank the plan for the Bay of Naples Inn in Maine, which opened in 1899.
